Olympic Long Jumper Tested Positive for Trenbolone After Eating Beef

Jarrion Lawson was exonerated after convincing CAS that he did not intentionally use anabolic steroids.
Jarrion Lawson, an Olympic sprinter and long jumper for the United States, won a major victory in his doping case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland on March 9, 2020. The three-judge panel unanimously overturned a provisional four-year suspension for doping.
Lawson tested positive for traces of epitrenbolone, a metabolite of the popular steroid trenbolone, in June 2018. The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) suspended him for four years as a result. This caused him to miss the entire 2019 athletics season.
Jarrion Lawson always denied using anabolic steroids.
Lawson always maintained that he never knowingly used anabolic steroids. Lawson’s defense team presented evidence that the trenbolone positive was the result of eating beef that had been contaminated with trenbolone.
Lawson proved that the trenbolone came from a beef bowl ordered at a Japanese steakhouse in Arkansas on June 2, 2018. Cows are regularly injected with trenbolone acetate and testosterone propionate as growth promoters in the United States. The use of these anabolic steroids is perfectly legal in the United States as long as the steroid residue falls below certain thresholds.
Lawson is immediately eligible to compete once again. He last competed over 20 months ago at the 2018 IAAF Diamond League meet in London in July 2018.
Lawson placed placed fourth in the long jump at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. He won the silver medal in the long jump at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in London.
Lawson is now eligible to compete at the U.S. Olympic trials in June 2020. He hopes to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.
