LEO are constantly exposed to situations that will have an impact on their mental health. It is usually not one specific event that causes damage, despite it being the one they will refer to most when questioned, but it is the repeated exposure.
If it doesn't scare you, it is not heavy enough.

A really close bud of mine was a fireman, 30 years in and an incident that happened with a kid when he first started still haunts him.

LE, firemen, military etc all deal with situations that will damage the mental state...

I work with the police a lot. We do not carry guns as neighborhood services officers and deal with homeless meth heads all the time. I have seen some crazy stuff but never got involved. Never anything like shooting someone.

Recall the time that cop shot and killed the kid on the playground with a replica gun? Even though he was exonerated I know that messes with him.

Nut even more, Marines and Army infantry in real combat, I cannot think of anything that would cause PTSD worse than that.

We deal with that in combat, as well. We have shot kids who surprised us in the heat of battle with what looked like they were armed, they weren't. We were cleared, as they said 99 out 100 Marines would have pulled the trigger. It doesn't matter if you are cleared. Of all the Marines I have lost, all the fire fights I have been in, hit by IEDs, rocket attacks, etc... nothing hits PTS harder than taking an innocent life.

I agree it's the PTSD once you've served and attempt to live your life as if you were and average citizen.  Any level of government in these fields.  The average person has no Idea what one goes through after serving or years of LE.
