Proscar is a medication used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with enlarged prostate. It works by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body, which is involved in the development of BPH. Proscar is an inhibitor of steroid Type II 5a-reductase, which decreases the amount of DHT that causes growth of the prostate. It may take 3-6 months to see the benefits of using finasteride.
