What state do AG live in?  Never seen one

They are all over the south.
If it doesn't scare you, it is not heavy enough.

Went last night with a buddy who has only been bass fishing 2 years. He caught a 5! His new PB and he is stoked! It was windy and had a lot of probs positioning the boat I got skunked. I had a gar at the boat but I shook it loose.

Long nose or alligator gar? Those alligator gar can be fun to hook, but once you get to the kayak it is like WTF do I do now. Haha. Most people are concerned with the teeth, but the scales are what will tear your ass up. Sharp as a knife and always thrashing.

Gator gar. they are all over here. I have seen some that weigh probably 40-50 lbs but down south Tx they can get to be 200 lbs. in the Trinity river which is the river I fish. They just grow em bigger down there. We also see a very occasional alligator here in the backwaters and creeks. Head south and east and they get thick.

I read indians used the scales of gator gar as arrowheads. Yeah they are sharp and DAMNED tough. If you clean one they are good eating but have some metal sheers to get through the scales.

LA is loaded with them. I never seen any that were 200 lbs, but 5 footers wouldn't even turn a head. Dime a dozen.

I have caught them on night crawlers, dead market shrimp and cut bait. They are hard to get a good hook set if you don't let them chew on it for a bit. Their bills are hard as steel, so until they get the bait down to the corner of the mouth the hook doesn't really dig in. Sometimes you can get lucky, as they tend to roll and wrap themselves up in the line when they feel tension.

I do not target them but I have watched vid. Guys use cut carp with a smallish treble hook. They let the gar swallow the bait then just reel and fight the fish. I cannot recall but they must use some sort of wire leader.

I see.  A steel lead.  Amost like catch Tuog.  Their teeth can snap a line.  I use a steel lead for them.

I never used steel leader, just 50 lbs braid. I don't think I ever had one break off.

Just went up to Washington to fish for salmon. The higher than normal temps and early summer doomed us. We fished hard and never caught one. We did drive to the coast and caught a bunch of small fish.

Black rockfish which look like dark smallmouth bass. flounder which I am told is not common where we were, greenling, and my pal caught a buffalo sculpin.

Also went down to Oregon and fished but caught nothing there. Still a fun trip. Man I wanted to ship back a cooler of fresh wild caught salmon. We could have gotten a charter but our wives would have bitched.

Word to the wise, if you go on a fishing trip, don't take em.

Yeah, the start of the summer run can be difficult. Towards the end of summer run you can tear them up. I try and visit my brother up in WA at the end of August, beginning of September, each year. We will go fish the Green River (Duamish) and smash them. I probably caught and released 15-20 in just a couple spots along the banks last year. Nothing huge, maybe 12-14 lbs was the biggest and most in the 5-8 lbs range. The steelhead were a no-show.

I wish, also found out the Indians have a res at the mouth of the river and gill net across it. fed fish and wildlife can't do shit. They are being greedy and it will cost them with no fish in the future.

Yep. They are only required to leave a 6 ft gap along one of the banks. That has been a problem since I lived there 40 years ago.

Went out with a buddy tonight. Wind was howling so we went into a wind blown cove and hit spotlock looking for bass. I threw a good sized swim bait and started catching 20-24" hybrids. Probably caught 8-9 a piece before we went back to bass fishing. Thos things fight like hell!
