Bought an outboard for the kayak
« on: March 22, 2023, 04:35:58 am »
Already have a trolling motor. I got an old 2 stroke super lightweight 2.5 hp outboard. Got to clean the carb and change the sparkplug and fuel lines but I was told by a pal it runs last he tried it and he is a stand up guy. This will allow me to range WAY farther to fish. Now under paddle power which I do enjoy and I am a machine when paddling and never get tired but time.

$50

I really want a pedal kayak like a hobie but they are so $$$$$$$ and heavy.

Anyway, what do you think? Ever used an outboard on a kayak?

I wish I could say I did.  But I could never get my big butt into one.  I only tried the ones available at Resorts.  Not one that is personalized for me.  Which I was told I needed to look into.

We just bought 2 Johnboats to get into the back creeks.  Based on watching birds.  They were picking off fish in the back creeks like crazy last year.  This year we will make our way into those creeks which feed out to the river.

Never on my kayak, but I have a 1947 Johnson 2.5 hp Seahorse I used on my pirogue while in Louisiana. Worked pretty well pushing me around at 195 lbs, 40 lbs pirogue and probably 20 lbs of gear.
If it doesn't scare you, it is not heavy enough.

I have a trolling motor.  Not sure of the thrust.  But it gets me threw the Lilly pads with no fight whatsoever.  I used it twice to fish the pads wth a purple Jelly worm.

They are definitely in the creeks now. Fished yesterday and caught one FAT 12 inch bass and a small crappie on the main lake.

GF wanna fish LA, closest I get is the Texas side of Caddo.

BC,  lilly pads is frog territory. I used purple jelly worms back in the day. Still have a couple around somewhere,

I drop the worms right off the pads. They get sucked up quickly by large mouth

I am not making the trip down this year due to having several other nationwide trips I have planned. However, next year my annual trip to the Gulf should be back on. I will let you know when I go if you want to go with me. I fished Big Lake south of Lake Charles last year and did alright, but it is nothing like Grand Isle. Big Lake would not be too far of a drive for you. For me it is the same distance to both.

Where I live BC there are not any lakes with pads or any vegetation for that matter. We fish structure underwater such as humps, ridges and creek channels. I just got a Helix 7 with side imaging for the yak. Ought to really increase productivity with deeper water fishing. One of the lakes nearby used to have hydrilla. We would throw frogs and what a great time.

If I can pull it off I would love to. About 5-6 hours. Not bad, same distance to Surfside south of Galveston. I am gonna go to Florida and fish Biscayne bay next week.

Snook, gator specks, baby tarpon, permit, reds ect are piled up in there. Bonus, BONEFISH! always on my bucket list. I have never caught a redfish.

Have not tried putting one on my kayak yet either. Although I just yesterday FINALLY go the estimate on repairs to my pontoon boat I requested in October 22. It's going to be totaled (mixed emotions on that), $42k in repairs. So I may be able to put that 150 horse Yamaha on my Kayak now? LMAO

You would fit right in down in LA. I don't know how many John boats I have seen with engines in the 115-140 hp range. The hull says it is weighted at 40 hp, but they want that thing chiming.

Haha. I think a 15 hp Johnson has to weigh around 75 lbs or more.

So about the same as a deep cycle battery for my trolling motor. (About 65 lbs)

My neighbor just gave me a 10 hp outboard with 3 hours on it. It has sat in his attic for 30 years. I will see if I can get that running and put it on my buddy's two man pond prowler.
