Crappie are heating up
« on: February 19, 2023, 08:58:13 am »
Caught all keepers yesterday. Not one under 10" 1/2 on minnows and 1/2 on black and chartreuse jig.

FUN!

Nice! I was thinking of going Wednesday, but now it says it is 100% chance of rain and 20+ mph winds. Could change by then though.
If it doesn't scare you, it is not heavy enough.

I watched Jeremy Wade catch those on River Monsters. Makes me not want to get into the water.

LOL.  Mr. Wade is "The Man".  I've only seen two in my time in Ukraine.  They were maybe 5 lb or more.  I heard and tasted them.  They were good meat.  I watched them peel the skin off all dark the red and pink meat.

42 degrees. And warming. Went out on the boat and could not get bit. Came back to the slip and caught 2 big crappie before I had to go. They were full of eggs. By the end of the month if the water continues to warm they will turn on.

Next month if time allows.  I'm going to head to Poconos.  My friends own Trout hatcheries.  People come from all over to fish.  The funny thing is you catch them on their own eggs.  You just jab a hook in the eggs and fish.  I just do it because.  It's free and my diet in summer is 85% fish.

It is fun and good to eat.    I think they charge a certain amount per pound.

When I fished the Pecos river I used salmon eggs. Never caught anything though.

When we fished for Steelhead and Salmon in the Pacific NW we would use their eggs as bait. Only worked around the spawn though. Even if you froze the eggs from last year and tried them during the early runs. They would only bite eggs when they got spawn aggressive.

It must be a hackery thing.  They sell as bait but once you start catching them.  Most have eggs pouring out of them.

Crappie are up shallow. Biting minnows and jigs. I fished for bass but my pals were catching pigs right off the bank.

Went out last night. Bass fished. Slayed em. Biggest was 5 lbs. smallest 2 lbs. All on a watermelon red flake weightless trick worm. I used a spinning rod with 15 lbs braid and a 12 lbs fluoro leader (FG knot) The key was casting as shallow as possible. On the bank was best or hitting the base of a tree or cover dead nut in less than 1 foot of water. Once away from cover, reel in fast as I tried working it back into 3 foot of water but not a bite. Shortly tried a wacky worm and a Tx rig craw, no bites.

wind sucked, could have caught more but I had to reposition after every cast as the wind was blowing me 30 feet out of where I wanted to be.

Knock them out of the box!  My guys just arrived from UK and EU.  I have inventory this weekend. To sort out the goodies to see what survived the four-week rough sea journey.

Have fun.
