I went out about a dozen times and seen 14 bucks of which only 2 were mature bucks. A bunch of .5-2.5 year olds. The mature bucks never presented me with a good shot opportunity. I did shoot one of the 2.5 year old bucks with my Glock 20 at 21 yards. I will admit, it was getting warm and late morning, so I fell asleep in the stand. I woke up to the sound of steps behind me when I see this little 2.5 year old 8 point walking directly behind my tree. He walked right through my wind and didn't spook, but he knew something was up. I knew I wouldn't be able to get my rifle up and in position without spooking him, so i grabbed my Glock and aimed for his heart.
I put a good shot on him, as he dropped, jumped up, ran through the fence and was dragging his front leg as he ran off into the woods out of my sight. I gave him a little time, got down and looked for blood. I couldn't find any. Not a single drop of blood for the 150 yards I seen him travel. I grid searched for a bit and still couldn't find blood. I thought, maybe I missed and he just dropped from being spooked and him dragging his leg was from running through the fence. I heard my buddy shoot on the other side of the hill early in the afternoon and the 4-wheeler fire up. I started to get hungry, so I headed back to the house to see what he got. I walked up and said, that looks exactly like the buck I shot at. He said, you hit him. He pulled the bullet right out of his heart. That buck survived for several hours with a 10 mm Sig Personal Defense Round embedded in his heart. Crazy tough. Anyways, he already tagged it, so it was his.
He and I haven't seen a single mature doe all season, bow or rifle, which is freaking crazy as hell. Nothing but yearlings.
I have caught a ton of crappie and bass.
