« on: November 19, 2022, 08:05:34 am »
I started yesterday with a 30 lbs thrust minn kota mounted on the back. I will post up my progress. Want to figure out some cable push/pull steering. If anyone has an idea.

I’ve always had trolling motors growing up. Ever year they got stronger and stronger thrust wise. A 30 thrust carry me and my 300 pound pound partner everywhere. They are durable. Keep the deep cell  charged it will last all day

It would be the same steering as having a rudder attached.

What are the laws in TX as far as registration for kayaks? In MO you do not need to register them, but if you attach a trolling motor to it then it must be registered like a boat and you will be required to pay personal property taxes on it every year. Fuck that noise.
If it doesn't scare you, it is not heavy enough.

Yep, got to register. $32

So if I put the motor on the back, then I cannot reach the tiller handle. So I am gonna cut down the shaft and run wires to a waterproof box and mount the  speed controller out of the head unit there. It is 5 forward and 1 reverse just put a knob on it. Steering is the prob.

There is the bixby steering kit which is $80. It is rudimentary but functional.

other option is something like this, a push pull cable. It would be the cleanest install but I do not know how much actuation I would get from the cable. I am tired of paddling either into the wind 40 minutes to get where I am going or paddling 40 back. it seems always one or the other. Paddling into a 15 mph wind is a bear. Time consuming as well.

Yeah, I don't know what is about the wind, but it always seems to be working against me no matter what direction I am going. It is in my face going out and coming back. Not sure how that works other than mother nature hates my ass.

Went out yesterday caught 3 small channel cats fishing for bass on jerk bait. No bass. It was cold! water was 53 degrees. Air was mid 40s. Very light wind. As the sun set it got real cold.

I went hunting on Saturday and always bring my fishing gear with me. It was 16 degrees and the wind was blowing 20 mph. The deer weren't moving, so I went to the pond to do some fishing. The best parts of the pond were frozen over, so I was stuck fishing what I could. Didn't get a bite. People think I am crazy, but I did it last year during muzzleloader season and it was a lot colder. I ended up catching a couple dozen crappie.
