The most believable of the stories, is that of the sniper using the .338 to take out a machinegun team. Missing the first round, making an adjustment then hitting his target. His target was not one man, it was a small group of men. Even his second shot, which hit could still be an adjustment round for subsequent shots.

The other two stories do not mention what the target is. Sure, the sniper fired two miles and killed an insurgent target. It could have been a squad of insurgents he fired at and he just happened to hit one... Target eliminated. With 22 years in the military and 6 combat deployments, I heard about stuff like this happening all the time.

If it doesn't scare you, it is not heavy enough.

Makes sense.  Thank you.  So, he got credit for an assist.??   If I can say that?

No, he still got credit for a kill. It is just his target might not have been man sized. It might have been a group of men and he just fired at the center of the group and happened to hit one. Being that it was a very large caliber round, it wouldn't even matter where he hit them.

I got a deer/hog  rifle recently that I have been shooting here and there. I have found my skills basically diminish very quickly at 150 meters. Range max is 200 meters. I cannot imagine shooting a mile. Got to be some luck in there mixed with the skill.

Definitely a lot of luck shooting out that far. When you look at the extreme long range matches, look at the size of the target they are shooting, 10'x7',12'x8', etc... Some of those guys will shoot 10 times and miss 9 out of 10. I think the longest target shot is over 4 miles and it took them over 60 shots to hit it with an elevation adjustment of 26 feet.
