I was going to say he is full of shit, but then he threw in the individuality statement in there. The cover your ass statement.

I definitely grow more on 2 grams of protein per pound of LBM while keeping all other macros the same.
If it doesn't scare you, it is not heavy enough.

I just stick with 1 gram per lbs. I do think you can do more with gear.

Without gear I do not think you can utilize it.

I agree. Without gear, for me excess protein is just extra calories that do not lead to fat accumulation.

Yeah he mentioned you may need less while on gear. I would say if your threshold of usage goes up, why not give your body more to use. I modulate protein intake to keep OFF mass for boxing and martial arts. If I consume over 120 grams per day I add mass. Mass burns fuels and I loose cardio. But for a BB every oz of lean mass is important.

GF you and JG bring up good points. I tend to agree. It’s so many ways to discuss this topic.  But I have not been off long enough to know how my body does if I’m off cycle. My cycle is depended on what  I’m prepping for. My protein is always at top levels.

So for you excess protein does NOT lead to stored as excess and converts to fat issue?

Nope. Granted, my carbs and fats are not high either. I rarely go over 200 grams of carbs a day during the off season, minus cheat weekend. As long as I keep my carbs low, I can eat a ton of protein and not get fat. At 198 lbs I was eating 4000 calories around day 450 grams of protein, 200 grams of carbs and 160 grams of fats as my maintenance with cheat weekends every other weekend where I was consuming around 15,000 calories on those cheat weekends.

I go back to the study Dr. Antonio did where he took a group and increased their protein intake to 3.7 grams/kg of body weight. He did not change anything else in their diet or training. He just increased their protein intake on average by 200 grams per participant. The study was a year long. Results showed there were no negative impacts to health (lipids, liver, kidneys, etc... even though the American Heart Association says no one should have more than 80 grams of protein a day) and most gained LBM and lost body fat, despite being in excess caloric intake. Like Dr. Stevenson says, the thermogenic properties of protein are amazing.

Very interesting. I never heard that before. I just assumed that excess protein would increase gluconeogenesis thereby increasing glucose in the blood and more storage of fat. But what do I know?

Yep. During this contest prep I have not had to cut much in the way of total calories. I just adjust the macros around and start moving carbs and fats to protein. It is going to get to a point in the next couple weeks where I am probably going to have to drop it, but I haven't had to so far 6 weeks in.
