When I old and frail with medical issues that come with aging and a doctor does not refer me to a nutritionist.  I would not go back to him/her. At this point in my life nutritionist can only give us the basic, carbs, fats, protein, sugar levels, A1C ect. Most of them are not educated passed this.

I have not heard one tell my parents.  If they control their sugar with insulin.  They still want to watch consuming sweets and carbs due to fatty liver.  The liver always stores sugar or glucose as glycogen and release when the body needs it through the liver.  So, using insulin is ok but, if use as a clutch to keep blood sugar low every time you bust a cookie in your mouth.  You're going to pay for it through your fatty liver.

Doctors never tell the whole picture.  I know their busy.  Then refer them out to specialist.  We have a specialist for each of our parents aging condition.  My father in-law owns pharmacies.  He knows more about medication. Then the doctor it seems.

My aunt has sleeping issues.  I believe it's due to her high sugars.  I go to pick up her meds.  Her family doctor writes her a script for zolpidem and Dayvigo.  She asked me to give her meds before bed.  I noticed she asked me to give her both Dayvigo and Zolpidem.  Knowing what I know.  I said, wait a min you're not supposed to take these two together.  She said Well the Ambien is not working.  I told her so then take the Dayvigo by itself ect.

I called her doctor yesterday and asked, did the doctor explain to her she is not supposed to take these together?   She says, yes, she was told.  I can't say he did, or he didn't but now I will do her meds in a pill container. That mix would have knocked me on my butt.   Doctors are too old, too busy or don't give a damn. (Then refer out).

I feel you. My wife was having some issues and her doctors just wanted to throw meds at her. I gave her a list of labs she needed to have the doctors pull and the doctors were resistant at first. Then my wife told them I was registered dietician, which I am not, I just hold a certificate in nutrition from NASM, but they had no problems ordering the labs once they knew I was the one pushing her to get them done. Labs came back with a bunch of red flags and we were able to start addressing them APPROPRIATELY.
